Maintenance therefore becomes more important rather than less.

A neglected standard car can develop problems. Adding performance to an already neglected vehicle increases the chances of exposing existing weaknesses.

The best approach is preventative maintenance rather than waiting for something to fail.

Keep Up With Regular Servicing

The most important advice is also the least exciting: service your car properly.

Engine oil deteriorates with mileage, temperature and use. Filters become contaminated, spark plugs wear and other consumable components eventually need replacement.

Follow an appropriate servicing schedule and avoid stretching intervals simply to save money.

If your vehicle is driven particularly hard or has been extensively modified, more frequent maintenance may be sensible.

Certain petrol calibrations are developed around a particular minimum octane rating.

Higher-performance turbo petrol engines can be sensitive to fuel quality because ignition timing and knock control are important to both performance and engine protection.

Do not have a car calibrated for higher-octane fuel and then repeatedly fill it with unsuitable fuel to save a few pounds.

Diesel Cars

Diesel fuel quality also matters.

Diesel engines rely on extremely precise high-pressure injection systems, so fuel-system health should not be overlooked.

Check Your Spark Plugs

Hoses, connections and intercooler components need to remain properly sealed.

If your car suddenly loses performance, develops unusual turbo noises or behaves differently under acceleration, have it investigated rather than assuming the remap has somehow “worn off”.

Look After the DPF on a Remapped Diesel

If your diesel has a DPF, normal DPF maintenance principles still apply after remapping.

The vehicle needs appropriate driving conditions to complete regeneration when required.

Repeated short journeys can make this more difficult on certain diesel vehicles.

If your DPF warning repeatedly appears, investigate why.

A faulty sensor, engine problem or another issue may be contributing to excessive soot accumulation or failed regenerations.

Simply clearing the warning does not solve the underlying problem.

Check Tyres More Often

It is easy to focus entirely on the engine after remapping, but additional performance is useless without good tyres.

More torque can make poor or worn tyres lose traction more easily.

Check pressures regularly and monitor tread condition.

Use suitable tyres from reputable manufacturers, particularly on higher-powered vehicles.

Tyre condition affects acceleration, braking and cornering, making it one of the most important safety considerations on any performance car.

Do Not Forget Your Brakes

A Stage 1 remap does not automatically mean your car needs an expensive big-brake conversion.

However, the existing braking system should be in good condition.

Check pads and discs as part of normal maintenance and deal with vibration, unusual noises or reduced braking performance promptly.

If you regularly use the car for demanding performance driving, upgraded braking components may become worth considering.

Being able to slow down consistently is just as important as being able to accelerate faster.

Avoid Full Throttle at Very Low RPM

This is particularly relevant for high-torque turbocharged engines.

Using maximum throttle in a high gear at very low engine speed can place substantial load on the engine and drivetrain.

Instead, change down when necessary and allow the engine to operate within a more appropriate part of its rev range.

Having more torque does not mean you should demand maximum load from the engine at every opportunity.

Mechanical sympathy still matters.

Does Stage 2 Require More Maintenance?

Potentially.

Stage 2 vehicles usually have supporting modifications and operate at a higher performance level than Stage 1.

The further you move from factory specification, the more important maintenance and inspection become.

Keep an eye on hoses, cooling, ignition components, fluids and any aftermarket parts.

You should also make sure replacement components are appropriate for the modified setup.

What About Stage 3 Cars?

Stage 3 vehicles require considerably more attention.

An upgraded turbocharger, fuelling changes and other substantial modifications create a very different maintenance proposition from a standard car with Stage 1 software.

Maintenance schedules should reflect the specific build.

At this level, there is no sensible universal servicing plan.

The components fitted, performance level and how the car is driven all need to be considered.

Can a Remap Be Removed?

In most cases, yes.

The ECU can generally be returned to its original software if required.

However, returning the software to standard does not undo mechanical wear or reverse physical modifications.

A Stage 2 or Stage 3 car would also need its hardware returned to standard if you wanted to restore the complete vehicle to factory specification.
